As with so many things in life, Nikia came into Doula work indirectly. When her sister was born when she was 15, she found herself with a love for the littlest of babies. Graduating in 2017 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, she always imagined herself working in a supportive counselling role. Through a friend she was introduced to the concept of doula work, the ability to support a parent through the confusing transitions of starting a family, and the seed of birth work was sown.
Chromatic Care was born from a desire to fill the holes she saw. A lack of support, resources and information for families during big transitions. The journey to and through parenthood is never without some challenges but these hurdles may be larger for some of us. Fertility, pregnancy, infant care and loss are part of many lives but the experiences cannot be weighed from one to the next. As a Holistic Doula, Nikia hopes to be able to help fill these holes where she can from a place of respect, compassion, support and empathy. If you need a bit of extra help postpartum, are struggling with fertility in silence, or grieving and unsure how to cope, please get in touch! We can find support for you, no matter the situation.
Nikia is certifying through and aims to be registered with the by the end of 2023. Currently, Doula services in Canada are an unregulated industry though internationally this is not the case. By becoming a member with Doula Service Association of BC and as an alumni of Doula Canada, Nikia has access to continued education and the most up to date resources from around the world. Maintaining a membership with these organizations requires a doula to provide proof of continued education and testimonials from clients throughout their career. This way Chromatic Care can be sure to provide care that is fair, science backed and free of judgement. If and when Canada chooses to apply regulations to non-medical birth support we can know we are already meeting industry standards, which will likely be where any federal guidelines begin. You can be assured that Chromatic Care will follow any legislation as it is implemented.
Always having a love for the coast, Nikia and her partner live on the lower mainland of British Columbia, Canada. She loves the time spent with animals at home, fostering or volunteering with local organizations such as PADS and the BCSPCA. Many hobbies including gardening, woodworking, sewing and crafting mean boredom is her smallest concern (the bigger one is where to store the hobbies).
